Join us in prayer every Wednesday to Thursday as we seek God's face and tap into the joy of the LORD. This week's prayer guide, Week 47, focuses on the joy of the LORD as a key characteristic of the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17).

Joy vs. Happiness

While happiness is a fleeting emotion, joy is a long-lasting state of being characterized by contentment, satisfaction, and a settled assurance that God is in control of life overall. Joy is a response to God's Word (Psalms 119:14), God's reward to believers (Isaiah 65:14), and synonymous with God's presence (Psalms 16:11).

Prayer Points

  • Pray that we will be strengthened in our being by the joy of the LORD (Nehemiah 8:10).
  • Pray that God of hope will fill us with joy and peace (Romans 15:13).
  • Pray that the fruit of joy will manifest at the core of our being by the workings of the Holy Spirit.
  • Pray that joy will bring wellness and wholeness in our spirits, souls, bodies, hearts, and minds.
  • Pray that we will experience a breakthrough in our spirits as we open ourselves to the joy of the LORD.
  • Pray that the surrounding atmosphere will shift and reverberate with great joy and power.
  • Pray for a breaking of yokes, chains, and bondages.
  • Pray that the joy of the LORD will usher us into realms of liberty in God.
  • Pray that nothing shall be able to rob us of our joy in the LORD.
  • Pray that God will show forth His glory and bring solutions, that our joy might be full.

'I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, '
Ephesians 4:1

1. The Standard of God’s Presence
The level at which you value the presence of God will determine the depth at which you encounter Him. On many occasions in the scripture we see the response people had when they recognised God was in their midst, Moses hid is face at the burning bush, the Israelites trembled with fear at the foot of Mount Sinai, Joshua fell prostrate before the Lord of Hosts and so much more. The presence of God causes men to reverence HIm.

'And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ ” So Aaron held his peace.'
Leviticus 10:3

The Lord must be regarded as holy, reverenced, hallowed and honoured. The 24 Elders at the sight of His majesty cast off the crowns, dethroned themselves and enthroned Him on their praise.

The Lord must be glorified, not only in private but publicly, ‘before all the people.’ This is why in Romans 1:16 it says, ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel...’ it is a necessity that we show our value for God in all things before all people.

2. The Standard of Your Lifestyle
Does your lifestyle glorify God? Is He honoured in your choices and in your character? In Romans 1:21 it says, ‘Though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God.’ It is not enough therefore to be aware of God or who He is, our lifestyle must reflect Him. One of the major criticisms that fall upon the church from unbelievers is that Christians are judgemental or often hypocritical, in other words, we don’t look like theChrist we claim to serve.

We can be quick to condemn others sins but tend to justify our own, for sake of being relatable we compromise our values, whether it is corrupt practices to attain wealth, or sex before marriage to satisfy the lust of the flesh, the bible says, ‘You cannot serve both God and mammon,’ there is no room for compromise in faith, obedience is not about convenience, with God it is a non- negotiable. In Hebrew there is no word for ‘obey’ it is the same word as ‘hear’ - Shama - because to God you have not truly heard if you have no obeyed.

'(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),’ Ephesians 5:9

The scripture above lets us know that the evidence of the Spirit of God active in your life is seen through:

• Goodness - your ability to live with empathy and compassion for others, to be forgiving and meekness

• Righteousness - your ability to live in obedience to God, to rely on HIs grace and direction, to commit to worshipping and serving God and to let your light so shine.

• Truth - Your submission to the truth of God, your commitment to faith in His word, in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to oppose every lie, hypocrisy or falsehood that seeks to exalt itself against the knowledge of God.

If darkness cannot coexist with light, it follows that whenever light shines darkness must flee, therefore whenever you find that darkness prevails, it means there is an absence of light.

If Nigeria is covered in darkness, then it simply follows that there is no light shining in Nigeria!

If you were locked in a totally dark room you wouldn’t be able to see anything, not even your hands in front of you, this is because darkness conceals or hides things, however once the light is turned on, you would be able to see everything upon which the light shines. Light reveals or exposes the things that darkness conceals.

Jesus Christ is the light of this world;
Then spake Jesus again unto them saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12)

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

Here, Jesus gives the antidote to darkness ‘If you follow Him and let your light shine, darkness cannot continue, this applies to every aspect of life and the nation.

'And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.'
Romans 12:2
A lot of the time when we see ‘problem areas’ in our lives, the first thing we try to do is see how we can solve it through various actions. If it’s improving productivity, we gives ourselves tasks and put pressure on ourselves to achieve them. We may tell ourselves to go to sleep every day at a certain time ignorer to wake up earlier, we tend to overburden ourselves with daily regiments and tasks to be achieved.

None of this is wrong, it is important to organise our external lives, but what I have often found is the same zeal with which we start this long list of daily tasks doesn’t often last. Eventually the fire burns out and we return to the same starting point, struggling with the same issues. This is because we live in an age of instant gratification, where we glorify the appearance of a thing more than the reality of it. So, often we find ourselves trying to solve internal problems with external actions.

Jesus said, many will come saying they prophesied in His name, healed the sick in His name, cast out demons in His name and still He will turn to them and say, “Get away from Me, I never knew you.” (See Matthew 7:22-23). This points to an important truth, the heart matters more to Christ than our actions. The bible says in Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.” You can fake actions for a while, but the truth in your heart will always come through in the end.

If you really want to see lasting change in your life, it’s less about what you do and more about how you think. In our core scripture Romans 12:2, we see that transformation happens when you change how you think. This is why God calls for us to not let anxious thoughts reign in our minds but to instead approach Him with our needs from the stand point of thanksgiving, or why we are to cast down every high thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (see 2 Corinthians 10:5-5).

While external circumstances are real and cannot be denied, it can be easy to take the unprofitable route of negativity and blame, but the only way to real change comes in the choice to focus and set your mind on better things, with that God will lead you along the right path where no need is unmet.

'Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. '
